**WARNING…This is a bit long but with lots of photos**
Have you ever been inspired to do something but was just really scared to do it? Um, I have! I’ve been wanting to paint some of my oak furniture but up until now I was just all talk. For months and months I was oogling all the wonderful painted furniture projects in blogland. So, I have taken the plunge and painted my oak bedroom set, this is all part of Operation Kiss Me Good Night.
Yeah! I know that is a BIG project for my first time with painting furniture. But, if you know me…I go big or go home!!! And, I really really wanted to paint with Annie Sloan Chalk paint.
I do want to be clear that I have NEVER used Annie Sloan chalk paint before nor have I EVER painted furniture before. And, YES I was scared crapless. I mean really what was I thinking painting my bedroom furniture. If this turned into a disaster I would have just died. Not to mention how furious The Mr. would have been.
Here’s a look at what my bedroom set looked like before I painted it.
Oh the anxiety I had at this point but I just took a deep breath and dove in. I went and bought Annie Sloan chalk paint in Olde Ochre and clear wax. Now before I started this project I read lots about ASCP and watched some tutorials and relied on my dear bloggy friend Nancy @ Artsy Chicks Rule to help me out.
I also purchased this wonderful brush with my paint. It was a bit pricey but it made my job so much easier. The chalk paint is not cheap either especially when you realize it’s only a quart you are purchasing. WELLLLLLL!!! That quart of paint did my whole bedroom set with two coats. I was a happy girl again.
I wanted to keep some of the wood on my furniture. I darkened the wood with Minwax PolyAcrylic in Antique Maple. I did the tops of the furniture and taped off the other areas I wanted to darken as well.
After I was done staining I wiped down all the furniture and lightly and I mean lightly sanded. Then I added a little water mixed with paint and just started to brush the paint on. Once dry I just added a second coat.
Once the paint was completely dry it was time to put on the wax. For this you will need a brush and clean cloths. I used white t-shirts and a micro fiber cloth.
Apply the wax evenly on the furniture.
I let it sit for a few between coats then started to wipe it with the t-shirt until if started to get smooth.
After about an hour I went back and gave it a good rub down with a micro fiber cloth.
For me, doing this gave my bedroom set a nice smooth sheen. Can you see the shine?
I also painted the handles and distressed them a little.
And, that my friends is all there is to it!! Now would you like to see my bedroom furniture…good! I’m excited to share it.
I won’t bore you with a lot of jibberish talk because this post is long enough. But, here are some before & afters of my bedroom set.
