Nothing like switching gears at the last minute. I was working on another post for today and needed to do a recap of the “Getting Creative at Home” blog tour that I participated in all last week. But, I have been getting such raves about my dresser shelf that I knew I had to share it, like right now!
What do you do when you have a DVR box and a DVD player on your dresser? Not much. You can’t put anything on it believe me I’ve tried and melted some make-up.
My bedroom makeover is coming to an end but I just needed to figure out something to utilize this space on top of the dresser. I’m thinking a shelf would be perfect.
I was on a mission to figure out how to do this. I needed the perfect size to fit over both electronics, leave room for them to breath and be able to add some bedroom eye candy…known as decor!
Off to Lowe’s I went and walked that store until I came up with something good. If I couldn’t figure it out I would have hung a shelf but it’s not what I wanted to do. As The Mr. and I walked the store and checking out the wood if became quite frustrating. I wanted to be able to stain the shelf and I wanted it to match the dresser so then we realized that I would need a piece of Oak.
And, Waalaa!! We found a stair tread that was the perfect size and these cute little legs that were PERFECT!!
This is where The Mr. turns my vision into awesomeness…
He pre-drilled some holes for the legs. After the holes were drilled he added in some wood glue and just screwed the legs into the stair tread.
There is a funny story behind this. I had just got out of the shower, was in a towel and had to call a blogger I was about to meet. And, I couldn’t miss a photo op. So, on the phone in a towel, I’m taking pics of The Mr. making my dresser shelf. See, a bloggers work is never done.
The shelf is looking great and I was so excited. Aren’t the legs the cutest thing?
We let the glue dry over night before we stained it.
I used the PolyShades in Antique Walnut. It’s the same stain I used to darken the tops of my oak bedroom furniture.
Now it was time to put the shelf on the dresser. I was squealing with excitement. I even had to hurry up and hang my new photo frame up.
I glued some felt on the bottom of the legs, just cause I would freak if it scratched the top of my dresser. But, it fit perfectly and looks just like I had envisioned.
Now I have all sorts of room for all the pretties I want to put on the dresser.
I still can’t stop looking at it, it makes me smile every time I walk in my bedroom. Here’s a glimpse of the newly painted dresser and the dresser shelf with all the pretty eye candy on it.
Can you believe that dresser was just a plain oak dresser a month ago?
Here’s a few before & afters for you:
Operation Kiss Me Goodnight is close to completion. This was just one of the many things that have changed. If you missed the beginning or the progress of my bedroom make-over you can visit “The Beginning” , “The Progress“, and “The Update“.
I will be sharing the newly painted bedroom set with you soon. It’s finally complete.
I also want to give a shout out to DeDe from Designed Decor. She was in NC and took time out from visiting friends to meet me. It was so much fun meeting her, I loved every minute of it. I can’t wait to go back home next year and make a stop in Ohio to see her again.
